HJ207: Commending the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals on the 100th anniversary.
WHEREAS, in March 1906, the Mann High School bill was passed by the General Assembly of Virginia, which encouraged school divisions to establish and maintain high schools; and
WHEREAS, the founding of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals—a professional education organization of middle level and high school principals and assistant principals—was a direct result of the Mann High School bill of the General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, in 1925 several professional education organizations merged to form the Virginia Education Association, and principals were affiliated with VEA; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals changed its constitution and bylaws in 1962 to give principals control and direction of the National Honor Society in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals merged with the Association of Negro Principals to form the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals of the Virginia Education Association in 1968; and
WHEREAS, in 1974 the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals initiated a process to restructure the Association and became an independent entity apart from its affiliation with the Virginia Education Association; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals is the official sponsor of the Virginia Student Councils Association, which is the oldest student leadership organization in the country; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals is the sponsor of the Virginia Association of Honor Societies and the Virginia Association of Student Activity Advisers; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals’ mission is to assist school principals and assistant principals in providing leadership to their schools and communities for the purpose of improving the education of Virginia’s youth; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals is dedicated to supporting principals and assistant principals who have made a profound difference in the lives of students across the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals on the occasion of its 100th anniversary and its rich leadership history and dedication to the Commonwealth in helping students reach challenging goals today and ensuring the promise of future opportunities tomorrow; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the unique contributions of this valuable organization.
