HJ213: On the death of Harry Watkey Easterly, Jr.
WHEREAS, Harry Watkey Easterly, Jr., community benefactor, business executive, writer, and avid golf enthusiast, died on June 16, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Harry Easterly attended St. Christopher's School on scholarship and the Virginia Military Institute, where he was class president in 1944, until his education was abruptly interrupted by a call to military service with the United States Marine Corps in World War II, on both Iwo Jima and Okinawa, in the Pacific; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Harry Easterly established a career as a business executive with Concrete Pipe and Products Company, and later in the securities industry with J. C. Wheat and Company, now Wachovia Securities; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly served as president, a volunteer position, as well as the executive director, a paid position, of the United States Golf Association in Far Hills, New Jersey, for three-and-a-half years; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly returned to his hometown of Richmond to rejoin Wachovia Securities and also served for a time as president of the Virginia State Golf Association; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly enjoyed a lifetime passion for golf and was known for his belief in strictly adhering to the rules; he felt strongly that the game of golf taught valuable lessons for young people—integrity, honesty, discipline, and to be knowledgeable of the rules and to stick to them; and
WHEREAS, a skilled practitioner, Harry Easterly won both the Richmond City Golf Championship and the Championship of the Country Club of Virginia many times, as well as competed in the State Championship, the National Championships, and numerous interstate team competitions; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly was a welcome member at the most prestigious golf clubs such as the Country Club of Virginia, Pine Valley Country Club, Augusta National, the Ballybunion Golf Club in Ireland, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and the Muirfield, both in Scotland; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly mentored young people from diverse backgrounds so they might learn and love the game of golf and play by the rules as he did, applying these rules to his life; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly's exuberance for golf inspired several generations of golfers; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life, Harry Easterly gave generously of his considerable gifts and talents to benefit the community, including charitable projects sponsored by the Richmond City Planning Commission, the Retarded Children's Association, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and Westminster Canterbury; and
WHEREAS, Harry Easterly served his community, especially young people, with ardent devotion and enthusiasm and will be missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Harry Watkey Easterly, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harry Watkey Easterly, Jr., as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
