HJ289: Celebrating the life of Sparrel Ratliff, Jr.
Patrons-- Bowling, Johnson, Kilgore and Phillips; Senators: Puckett and Wampler
WHEREAS, Sparrel Ratliff, Jr., a respected citizen and retired railroad engineer, died on July 6, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Sparrel "Toddy" Ratliff was born on August 26, 1926, in Tookland and graduated from Grundy High School, where he played guard and was captain of the football team; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Toddy Ratliff served his country in the United States Navy on an oil tanker in the Palau Islands and Okinawa; and
WHEREAS, for over 34 years, Toddy Ratliff worked for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, retiring in December 1986; and
WHEREAS, Toddy Ratliff was in the railroad's first class of employees to be promoted to an engineer when the railroad switched from steam locomotives to diesel locomotives; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated and compassionate supporter of his community, Toddy Ratliff was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotives, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), AMVETS Post 37, the John S. Ratliff Chapter of the American Legion Post 164, and the chaplain for the Grundy Volunteer Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Toddy Ratliff was a devoted member of the church and served many years as a deacon at Ratliff Chapel Baptist Church in Tookland; and
WHEREAS, Toddy Ratliff always had time to help, as well as relax and enjoy life with his neighbors, and he will be fondly remembered for his great enjoyment of fishing, hunting, playing Rook, and raising a magnificent garden each summer; and
WHEREAS, Toddy Ratliff will be missed by his family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Ratliff Chapel Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginia gentleman, Sparrel Ratliff, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sparrel Ratliff, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
