HJ361: Celebrating the life of Jack Thomas Shoosmith.
Patrons-- Cox, Hall, Ingram, Jones, D.C., Nixon, Waddell and Ware, R.L.; Senators: Marsh, Martin and Watkins
WHEREAS, Jack Thomas Shoosmith, the retired president and chief executive officer of Shoosmith Brothers, Inc., in Chesterfield County, died on January 13, 2006; and
WHEREAS, a native of Chester, Jack Shoosmith, the youngest of the Shoosmith brothers, joined the family firm after attending Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield County; and
WHEREAS, Jack Shoosmith began working with his older brothers as a truck and bulldozer driver, became a partner in 1967, and developed the idea of expanding into the landfill business, which under his leadership became the most successful part of the company's operations; and
WHEREAS, Jack Shoosmith later became president of Shoosmith Brothers, Inc., a successful construction, commercial paving, and landfill company in Chester; and
WHEREAS, appointed by Governor George Allen, Jack Shoosmith served for eight years on the Board of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and in 2002 he donated 81 acres of tidal wetlands to the Game Department for the Johnson Creek Wildlife Management Area; and
WHEREAS, Jack Shoosmith gave generously for many years to the local YMCA, frequently paved church parking lots at no charge, and was well-known among local fire and rescue crews for helping them fight fires with his equipment; and
WHEREAS, a prominent, successful, and widely respected businessman, Jack Shoosmith leaves an enviable legacy of business success combined with generosity and dedication to the Chesterfield County community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Chesterfield County, Jack Thomas Shoosmith; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack Thomas Shoosmith as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
