WHEREAS, Ronald V. Dolan, longtime resident of Lynchburg, prominent business leader, active community leader, and generous philanthropist, died November 15, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Ron Dolan, born in Stockdale, Pennsylvania, and the youngest of 10 children,  graduated from St. Vincent’s College with a degree in philosophy; and

WHEREAS, Ron Dolan moved to Lynchburg in 1972 to join First Colony Life Insurance Company and with his close friend, George Stewart, led a management team that brought First Colony to national prominence; under their guidance, First Colony virtually revolutionized the United States life insurance industry by pioneering the growth of independent brokerage general agencies; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his more than 25 years of dynamic leadership, Ron Dolan was honored by the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies with its highest award, the Douglas Mooers Award; and

WHEREAS, Ron Dolan was a man of deep humility, who always saw hardship and need as a call to action; and

WHEREAS, Ron Dolan and his wife, MaryJane Dolan, contributed their time, talent, and treasure to countless charities and civic projects; and

WHEREAS, among the community organizations that benefited from their significant philanthropic contributions were the United Way of Central Virginia, the Amazement Square, and the Lynchburg Neighborhood Foundation; and

WHEREAS, in 2002 Ron Dolan and his wife established the Ron and MaryJane Dolan Center for Peace and Justice to promote cooperation among the colleges and universities of Central Virginia by fostering a dialogue on topics pertinent to social justice, economic justice, peace, principled leadership, and ethics; and

WHEREAS, Ron Dolan served his community with dignity and devotion and will be missed and fondly remembered by his family, his numerous friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, Ronald V. Dolan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ronald V. Dolan as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
