HJ403: Commending the University of Richmond football team.

WHEREAS, the 2005 University of Richmond football team far exceeded expectations by finishing in a tie for the league championship and by advancing to the NCAA Division 1-AA football playoffs; and
WHEREAS, picked by most preseason experts to finish fifth in the six-team South Division of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the University of Richmond Spiders struggled at the beginning of the season, winning only one of their first four games; and
WHEREAS, under the expert guidance of Head Coach Dave Clawson, the Spiders, led by senior quarterback Stacy Tutt, gathered their energy, turned their season around, and won seven consecutive games; and
WHEREAS, the Spiders finished in a tie for the championship of the Atlantic 10 Conference, widely regarded as the class of NCAA Division 1-AA football and home to two of the past three national champions; and
WHEREAS, the Spiders then traveled to Hampton University for the opening round of the NCAA Division 1-AA playoffs and defeated the previously unbeaten Hampton Pirates for their eighth consecutive victory; and
WHEREAS, the Spiders' extraordinary 2005 season came to an end with a close loss to a powerful team from Furman University in the second round of the national playoffs; and
WHEREAS, the University of Richmond Spiders' successful 2005 season was a tribute to the team's talent, resilience, and perseverance; the coaching staff's hard work and preparation; and the Richmond students' and fans' unwavering support; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the University of Richmond football team on its exceptional regular season and postseason triumphs; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Dave Clawson in honor of the remarkable success of the 2005 University of Richmond football team.
