HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 424 Offered March 1, 2006 Celebrating the life of John William Bouldin, Jr. ---------- Patrons-- Armstrong, Hurt and Marshall, D.W.; Senator: Reynolds ----------

WHEREAS, John William Bouldin, Jr., of Martinsville, respected citizen and longtime city treasurer, died on February 8, 2006; and

WHEREAS, a Martinsville native, John “Jack” Bouldin was born on December 25, 1928, and graduated from Martinsville High School in 1947 and Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University, in 1950; and

WHEREAS, in 1952 Jack Bouldin enlisted in the United States Army and served his country while stationed in Germany; and

WHEREAS, after being honorably discharged in 1955, Jack Bouldin returned to his hometown to work on the local newspaper and in radio; and

WHEREAS, when the city treasurer of Martinsville died in 1964, Jack Bouldin was appointed by Judge John Hooker to replace him; and

WHEREAS, a competent and highly respected professional, Jack Bouldin ran for the office in the next election, won handily, and served with distinction as city treasurer for 27 years; and

WHEREAS, concerned about the well-being of all the residents of his community, Jack Bouldin served as president of both the Martinsville Jaycees and the Martinsville Exchange Club; and

WHEREAS, the Martinsville Exchange Club honored Jack Bouldin with its Distinguished Service Award in 1962 and made him a lifetime member; and

WHEREAS, Jack Bouldin will be remembered for his compassionate and generous nature and his dedication to the City of Martinsville and will be missed by his family, his numerous friends and colleagues, and the congregation of Broad Street Christian Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exemplary public servant and outstanding Virginian, John William Bouldin, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John William Bouldin, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
