WHEREAS, Sarah Lowry, respected citizen and longtime resident of Hanover County, died on November 21, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Sarah “Sally” Lowry was born on May 7, 1921, in Washington, D.C., and moved with her family during the depression back to their roots in Offley Mill in Beaverdam; and

WHEREAS, a remarkable woman, Sally Lowry attended Saint Margaret’s in Tappahannock, graduated from Hollins College, and joined the first class of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) in 1942; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Sally Lowry served tours of duty in Washington, D.C., and New London, Connecticut, leaving military service as a lieutenant in 1946; and

WHEREAS, in 1955 Sally Lowry was appointed and served for eight years as postmaster for Beaverdam; and

WHEREAS, after completing a master’s degree at the University of Virginia, Sally Lowry taught for both the Richmond City and Hanover County public schools until retiring in 1985; and

WHEREAS, committed to the prosperity and growth of Hanover County and the well-being of its residents, Sally Lowry was actively involved in local and state affairs and worked part-time as the coordinator of the “Clean Hanover” program; and

WHEREAS, Sally Lowry will be fondly remembered for her generous and compassionate spirit and missed by her family, her numerous friends and admirers, and the congregation of Fork Episcopal Church in Doswell; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Sarah Lowry; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sarah Lowry as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
