HJ465: Celebrating the life of Dr. Cyrus Uriah Brown.

WHEREAS, Cyrus Uriah Brown, a renowned Newport News and Hampton physician, died on February 11, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Cyrus Brown received a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, in 1949; and
WHEREAS, after serving three years in the United States Army, Cyrus Brown attended Howard University for post-baccalaureate studies and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College School of Medicine; he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, where he was chief resident during his final year; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Brown returned to Newport News to become the first African-American OB/GYN on the Peninsula and practiced there until his retirement in 1994; during his career he served as chair of the OB/GYN departments for Hampton General and Mary Immaculate Hospitals; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cyrus Brown, a dedicated professional, was an active member of several medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the American Board/College of OB/GYN, and the Peninsula and Old Dominion Medical Societies; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cyrus Brown was a life member of the NAACP and a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, an historic fraternity with an illustrious record of almost a century of service activities on behalf of African Americans; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cyrus Brown will be missed and fondly remembered not only by his family, but by an extended circle of friends, colleagues, and former patients in the Peninsula region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a pioneer and a beloved physician, Dr. Cyrus Uriah Brown; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Cyrus Uriah Brown as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his life of service.
