HJ502: Commending the Yorktown High School girls' swim and dive team.
WHEREAS, for the first time in 25 years, an Arlington public school team won a Group AAA athletic team state championship in a Virginia High School League sport; and
WHEREAS, the girls' swim and dive team from Yorktown High School in Arlington won the 2006 Virginia High School League Group AAA state swim and dive championship; and
WHEREAS, the Yorktown High School Patriots scored 185 points in the state meet to outdistance Fairfax High School and Robinson High School by five points and reverse an earlier defeat by Fairfax High School in the Northern Regional meet; and
WHEREAS, in the state meet, the Patriots captured two events—the 200-yard free style relay, setting a new state record of 1 minute 36.58 seconds, and the 200-yard medley relay, with a winning time of 1 minute 47.66 seconds, both All-American qualifying times; and
WHEREAS, Katie Radloff, a senior, joined three junior swimmers, Katy Hinkle, Thea Kromer, and Kristen Wolla, to win the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay to clinch the state title; and
WHEREAS, all of these Yorktown swimmers, as well as diver Meg Alderman, contributed points to the team's first Group AAA state championship with their performances in other events; and
WHEREAS, Erin McCracken, Molly Schmalzbach, and Hilary Stetekluh also participated at the state meet; and
WHEREAS, the Yorktown swimmers and divers team includes nearly 40 members who are led by Head Swim Coach David Lassiter, Head Dive Coach Bobby Meeks, and Assistant Swim Coach Maureen McMorrow; and
WHEREAS, the 2005-2006 Patriots from Yorktown High School experienced the most successful girls’ swim and dive season in Arlington history; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Yorktown High School Patriots was the culmination of years of effort by the athletes; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the 2005-2006 Yorktown High School girls' swim and dive team on its outstanding state championship performance; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Yorktown Patriots as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for future success.
