HJ505: Commending the Manchester High School girls' basketball team.
Patrons-- Cox, Dance, Hall, Ingram, Nixon, Reid and Ware, R.L.; Senators: Marsh, Martin and Watkins
WHEREAS, the Manchester High School girls' basketball team has had an exceptional 2005-2006 season and is in the final four of the Virginia High School League Group AAA state basketball tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Manchester Lancers, led by Central Region Coach of the Year and Dominion District Coach of the Year Jerry Gibbs, claimed a state quarter-final victory over the T.C. Williams Titans, 73-61, in overtime play, to reach the final four; and
WHEREAS, the Manchester Lancers, in retaliation for a hard-fought loss in the 2004-2005 season, defeated a strong and determined Monacan High School team, 55-51, to become Central Region champions; and
WHEREAS, the Manchester Lancers completed their regular season with a 28-1 record, won the Dominion District championship, and set a new school record with 26 consecutive victories; and
WHEREAS, senior guard Lindsay Biggs earned recognition as Central Region Player of the Year, Dominion District Player of the Year, all-district first team and all-region first team; senior forward/center Melanie Oliver was named to the all-district first team and all-region first team; and junior guard Jennifer O'Briant earned second team all-district honors; and
WHEREAS, these three players made exceptional contributions to the Lancers team that also includes Nicole McCombs, Bobbi Briggs, Maggie Day, Jenna Guthrie, Ja'Nell Jones, Brianna Thompson, Abby Hendricks, Alex Hines, Kristen Simms, and Julie Remmers; and
WHEREAS, the Manchester Lancers exemplify sportsmanship and competitiveness, and their success is a tribute to their preparation, talent and teamwork; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Manchester High School girls' basketball team on its exceptional 2005-2006 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Jerry Gibbs as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the Manchester High School girls' basketball team.
