HJ5094: Commending the Cople Elementary School community problem solvers team.
WHEREAS, the Cople Elementary School community problem solvers team, the LEAPFROGS, of Westmoreland County won first place in the state, as well as the junior division, educational category, at the Future Problem Solving International Conference held at Colorado State University, June 1-4, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Community Problem Solvers (CmPS) is a component of Future Problem Solving of Virginia, a yearlong educational program that combines the rigorous intellectual challenge of creative problem solving with an interdisciplinary study of the future; and
WHEREAS, Cople Elementary School CmPS team members are Victoria Swann, Erin Roberts, Kwame Gray, Natalie Carpenter, Dawn Shields, Martia Jones, Rachel Moss, Katie Johnson, Chiquita DeJesus, Zoe Davis, Callie Morgan, and Jim Ficklin, and the team is coached by Andrea Cottom and Anne Evans; and
WHEREAS, the team’s motto is Leaping into Science and the team name, LEAPFROGS, stands for “Learn Everything And Pass From Research Onto Gaining Scientific Knowledge”; and
WHEREAS, CmPS teams recognize, address, and overcome obstacles as they work together to develop a comprehensive plan of action and implementation for their chosen problem in order to make a positive difference in the community; and
WHEREAS, the LEAPFROGS worked to raise student tests scores on the science Standards of Learning tests in third and fifth grades; and
WHEREAS, other activities spearheaded during the school year by the LEAPFROGS included purchasing books, videos, and other science resources for the school; developing science activity booklets for grades K-5; creating science bookmarks and weekly science trivia questions for students; helping with the school’s science club; creating bulletin boards and science displays; and participating in presentations at Parent Teachers Association and Westmoreland County School Board meetings; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Cople Elementary School community problem solvers team on its first place junior division win at the Future Problem Solving International Conference; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Cople Elementary School community problem solvers team for its hard work and dedication.
