HJ5099: Commending the Chantilly High School economics team.
WHEREAS, the Chantilly High School economics team is recognized for its unprecedented performance in the National Economics Challenge, sponsored by the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) and The Goldman Sachs Foundation; and
WHEREAS, the remarkable and committed members of the Chantilly High School economics team are seniors Adriana Medina and Natalie Mutchler, junior Alex Pepper, and sophomore Sam Perkins; and
WHEREAS, to qualify for the challenge, each team member enrolled in a fall semester economics elective class taught by teacher, mentor, and coach, Joe Clement; and
WHEREAS, the National Economics Challenge is a highly competitive event in which teams of students answer rigorous questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics; an exciting quiz-bowl final round between the top two teams decides the overall winner of the championship; and
WHEREAS, competition begins with a written qualifying test and state meets are held in 35 states across the nation to determine the state championship teams that are then invited to compete at the regional level; and
WHEREAS, the enthusiastic Chantilly High School team won the state competition, sponsored by the Virginia Council on Economic Education and held at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond on March 30, 2006; and
WHEREAS, the highly motivated Chantilly team next appeared in the regional meet held in Philadelphia on April 23 - 24, 2006, and performed brilliantly, defeating other championship teams throughout the northeast; and
WHEREAS, on May 20 - 22, 2006, the dedicated Chantilly High School economics team traveled to New York City to compete in the National Economics Challenge as the northeast regional champion; and
WHEREAS, in an exciting and taxing competition against the best and brightest high school economics teams in the country, the hard-working and acclaimed Chantilly High School team won second place in the National Economics Challenge in New York; and
WHEREAS, Chantilly High School's runner-up placement in the 2006 championship is the best showing of any high school in the Commonwealth in the National Economics Challenge; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Chantilly High School economics team on its exemplary performance in the NCEE/The Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joe Clement on behalf of the members of the Chantilly High School economics team as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of their outstanding achievement.
