WHEREAS, Bertha Vernice Morgan Campbell of Richmond, respected citizen and longtime educator, died on June 3, 2006; and

WHEREAS, born in Elliston, Bertha Vernice Morgan was the fourth child of the late Walter Clarence and Gladys Steptoe Morgan; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Campbell attended and proudly served as the vice president of her 1944 graduating class at Virginia Union University; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Campbell married her devoted husband Dr. Gilbert G. Campbell, Sr., pastor-emeritus of Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, committed to helping to improve the lives of young people, Bertha Campbell’s career as an educator began at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Newport News, and she later taught in the public schools of both Chesapeake and Richmond; and

WHEREAS, after she retired from teaching in 1984, Bertha Campbell worked as the legislative aide to State Senator Yvonne Miller of Norfolk, continuing to help improve the quality of life for youth and families across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, always concerned for the well-being of others, Bertha Campbell was a faithful member of Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church, where she participated in the Daughters of Zion Deaconess Ministry, the Hospitality Committee, and her beloved Senior Citizens Group; and

WHEREAS, for more than 60 years, Bertha Campbell was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she served on numerous local and regional committees; and

WHEREAS, Bertha Campbell will be fondly remembered for her kind and compassionate nature and will be missed by her beloved husband and two children; her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; numerous other loving family members and friends; and the congregation of Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Bertha Vernice Morgan Campbell; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bertha Vernice Morgan Campbell as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
