WHEREAS, Bernard Lawrence Savage of Chesterfield County, admired community leader, benefactor and respected real estate broker, died on August 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Bernard Savage was born on August 8, 1924, graduated from John Marshall High School, and served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, Bernard Savage worked as a C & O Railroad executive until his position was transferred from Richmond, at which time he decided to make a career change; and

WHEREAS, Bernard Savage learned the real estate industry with the aid of friend and neighbor James Sowers, and after three years was prepared to venture out on his own, forming a partnership, Napier and Savage, with broker Oscar Napier; and

WHEREAS, the highly successful firm lasted 18 years and in 1976 Bernard Savage again started a new company, Savage & Company; and

WHEREAS, throughout his long and distinguished career, Bernard Savage, a hard-working and dedicated real estate broker, worked in sales and land development in the best interests of the citizens of Chesterfield County; and

WHEREAS, Bernard Savage gave his time and immense talents to numerous civic organizations, serving as a member and president of the Richmond Board of Realtors and as a member of the board of the Metropolitan Richmond Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, always concerned with the welfare of his fellow residents in Chesterfield, especially its young people, Bernard Savage was a tremendous supporter and fundraiser for the YMCA, a charter member of the board of the Midlothian YMCA, and the cofounder and first president of the Huguenot Little League; and

WHEREAS, Bernard Savage was instrumental in the creation of the Chesterfield Business Council; he was the first recipient of its Bernard L. Savage Community Service Award; and each year since, a citizen who has made outstanding contributions to Chesterfield County has been honored with the prestigious award; and

WHEREAS, Bernard Savage was an enthusiastic golfer and a charter member of the Willow Oaks Country Club; and

WHEREAS, Bernard Savage will be fondly remembered for his professionalism, as well as his generous and compassionate nature, and greatly missed by his loving family and friends, his countless admiring colleagues and clients, and the citizens of Chesterfield County and the Richmond Metropolitan area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the loss of a conscientious community leader and outstanding Virginian, Bernard Lawrence Savage; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bernard Lawrence Savage as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
