HJ5160: Celebrating the life of Deputy Sheriff Robert Earl Green.
WHEREAS, there are men and women within every community of the Commonwealth who respond to the summons to devote, and at times, to sacrifice their lives for the public welfare; and
WHEREAS, death comes for all of us, but death can strike too early, suddenly, and tragically for the individual who each day risks his very life to defend the law and order of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the brave men and women of law enforcement embody the convictions and courage from which arise the very fabric of the safety and security that make possible the peaceableness of our society; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Robert Earl "Robbie" Green of Powhatan County learned from his family, his school, his community, and his church that public service in devotion to the enforcement of the laws of the Commonwealth is the highest form of civic life; and
WHEREAS, death called for Deputy Green as he faithfully and heroically performed his dangerous duties on behalf of the people of Powhatan; and
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, September 20, 2006, on duty with comrades and friends, and stationed within the sacred precincts of his entire life, Deputy Green was killed in a tragic accident, while attempting to enforce the laws that enable Virginians to sleep in peace; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Green died doing the duty that he accepted, served, and loved; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Green was a son of Powhatan County, the child of Charlie and Jean Green, the devoted and beloved husband of Karen Harrison Green, and the devoted and loving father of a son, Robert Chaytor Green, aged three; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Green was the grandson of Dallas and Marian Green, the brother of Charlie Green, Jr., and the son-in-law of Roy and Mary Harrison; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Green was a graduate of Powhatan High School, a past member of the 276th Engineer Battalion of the United States Army Reserve, and a faithful member of Red Lane Baptist Church, who practiced his faith within both his family and his honorable profession; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Green has sacrificed his life for the welfare of the people from whom he sprang; and
WHEREAS, the integrity and heroism of the life of Deputy Robbie Green have been attested by an outpouring of sympathy on the part of the entire community of Powhatan and of thousands of other Virginians, each of whom mourns the sudden passing of this brave Deputy Sheriff in the very flush of life at age 33; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly, in mourning the death of Deputy Robert Earl "Robbie" Green, acknowledge the enduring example of service and sacrifice that he bequeaths to all Virginians, prominent among them his widow, his son, and his numerous relatives and friends; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mrs. Robert Earl Green, in sympathy with her bereavement and in grateful remembrance of her late husband's exemplary life of faith, love, and devoted service to the fundamental requirement of law and order in the County of Powhatan and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
