HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 82 Offered January 11, 2006 Prefiled January 10, 2006 Celebrating the life of Giles Henry Miller, Jr. ---------- Patrons—Scott, E.T., Cline, Janis, Lingamfelter, and O’Bannon; Senator: Houck ----------

WHEREAS,  Giles Henry Miller, Jr., of Culpeper, beloved benefactor and respected business and civic leader, died on October 4, 2005, at the age of 102; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller was born in Lynchburg on July 26, 1903, attended Lynchburg public schools and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1924; and

WHEREAS, in 1930 Giles Miller joined the Culpeper National Bank, where he diligently served the residents of Culpeper for 41 years, including 27 years as bank president and, since 1970, as chairman of the board; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to advancing the highest standards of quality in the banking industry, Giles Miller served as president of the Virginia Bankers Association and director of the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life for all of the citizens of Culpeper, Giles Miller generously gave of his time and considerable talents as president of the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club of Culpeper and he provided steadfast leadership as a revered member of the Culpeper Town Council for over 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller was widely known by several monikers, "Mr. Culpeper," "Mr. VMI," and "Mr. Republican" and he took great pride in his notable distinction as VMI's oldest living alumnus; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller was the only person in the history of VMI to serve as president of the Board of Visitors, the Alumni Association, and the Keydet Club and he was a spirited supporter of all of the VMI athletic teams, being inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his magnanimous service and generosity; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller will be long remembered for his generosity and devotion to the Culpeper community, and to his cherished alma mater, VMI; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller was devoted to his family and especially enjoyed time spent with his three granddaughters, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Giles Miller will be missed and fondly remembered by his loving family, his countless friends and admirers, and the citizens of the Town of Culpepper; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginia gentleman, Giles Henry Miller, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Giles Henry Miller, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
