WHEREAS, Larry LeGrande, an immensely talented catcher and right fielder, is celebrated as a Negro Leagues Baseball (NLB) Living Legend; and

WHEREAS, born on a small farm on the outskirts of Roanoke on May 25, 1939, Larry LeGrande attended school in Salem and was the youngest of nine children; and

WHEREAS, Larry LeGrande was an industrious boy and learned to work hard performing his daily chores of tending the hog and chicken pens and the family garden but every Saturday he played baseball all day long and was extraordinarily talented; and

WHEREAS, as a young player for the local Webster All Stars, Larry LeGrande had designs on making it to the big leagues and when the Memphis Red Sox and the Birmingham Black Barons played a game in Salem, the 14-year-old catcher approached a team scout and asked for a tryout as soon as he completed high school; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Larry LeGrande left the farm for Memphis, tried out for the Red Sox, made the team, and so began his professional career; and

WHEREAS, Larry LeGrande graced the fields of Memphis in 1957, the Detroit Stars in 1958, the Kansas City Monarchs in 1959 and 1961, and the Satchel Paige All Stars from 1961 to 1963 and was called to play for the Yankees' Major League Baseball (MLB) Florida State League team in 1959; and

WHEREAS, in 1964 Larry LeGrande chose to put down his glove for a position with General Electric in Salem where he worked until 1996, retiring after 32 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Larry LeGrande's exciting play in the NLB and MLB delighted fans for many years and he is an inspiration to young players aspiring to the game of baseball; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Larry LeGrande for his athletic ability, and as an exemplary role model for young people throughout the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Larry LeGrande as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the baseball memories he afforded baseball fans during the course of his exceptional career.
