SJ263: Memorial resolution; celebrating the life of William Darl Cosby, Sr.
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr., born on April 1, 1912, in western Henrico County, was called to eternal rest on February 7, 2006; and
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr.--"Dee,” as he was known to his family and friends--was reared and nurtured by loving parents on the family farm in Glen Allen with his older siblings, attended the old Springfield Elementary School in Short Pump, graduated from Virginia Randolph High School in 1931, earned a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Union University, and completed the master of science degree in Elementary Education at Virginia State University; and
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr., a veteran of World War II, served his country with distinction for three years in the United States Army on the borders of France and Germany before being honorably discharged in 1945 and attending college; and
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr., was an outstanding and dedicated educator, serving for 26 years in the Henrico County public school system as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal, and after his retirement became the curator of the Museum in Memory of Virginia E. Randolph in Glen Allen, a position very dear to his heart that he occupied for 28 years until his death; and
WHEREAS, he was also a charter trustee of 52 years and past president of the Virginia Randolph Foundation, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, a longtime member of Abner Baptist Church in Hanover County, William Darl Cosby, Sr., faithfully served his church family as a trustee and church treasurer until his death; and
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr., lived a full and active life, maintained the family farm throughout his life, was involved in his community and the teaching profession, served as president of the Henrico Teachers Association, and later in life assumed the post of manager of the H.T.A. Federal Credit Union, where he labored for 32 years until its merger with the Henrico Federal Credit Union in 1990; and
WHEREAS, William Darl Cosby, Sr., lent his time, gifts, talent, and resources to several professional associations and community organizations, among them Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Iota Sigma Chapter of Richmond, the Henrico County Civil League, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and
WHEREAS, although William Darl Cosby, Sr., will be mourned by his family, friends, students, and colleagues, his memory and the love they shared will remain in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of William Darl Cosby, Sr., native son and extraordinary man and educator; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Darl Cosby, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and appreciation of his contributions to the Commonwealth.
