SJ286: Celebrating the life of Sharron Palmeter Baucom.
WHEREAS, Sharron Palmeter Baucom of Dale City, a respected citizen and longtime public servant, died on February 3, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Palmeter Baucom was born in Elk City, Oklahoma, on August 15, 1942, and graduated from Elk City High School and Oklahoma State University; and
WHEREAS, on March 19, 1965, Sharron Palmeter married her beloved husband, Richard Gerald Baucom, and the couple became the parents of two sons, Robert Glen and Randall Gene; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom was a woman of commitment, integrity, and vision, who dedicated her life to making a difference in the civic, economic, and social vitality of her community, her region, and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, a Dale City resident since 1970, Sharron Baucom served as founding chairman and president of the Bel Air Woman’s Club and was a life member of the Potomac Hospital Auxiliary; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom gave generously of her time to the Dale City Civic Association, the Dale City Sanitary District Advisory Committee, and the Prince William Boys Home Admissions Committee; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom performed 30 years of dedicated public service in her career with the United States Census Bureau; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, Sharron Baucom was appointed as a director of the Prince William County Industrial Development Authority, where she served nearly 18 years; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom was appointed by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to update the 1998 County Comprehensive Land Use Plan and was subsequently elected by her peers to serve as the committee chairperson; and
WHEREAS, through excellent leadership and direction, Sharron Baucom provided invaluable input to the county staff, the County Planning Commission, and the County Board of Supervisors in the development of an updated plan, which has served as a guide for land use and a model for the 2003 five-year update; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom was instrumental in forming the Dr. William E. S. Flory Small Business Center, Inc., and served as a member of the board of directors for 15 years, including serving as chairman and vice chairman; and
WHEREAS, through her service on the Prince William County Industrial Development Authority, Sharron Baucom continuously demonstrated her commitment to the small businesses of Prince William County through her tireless support for the creation, establishment, and ongoing success of the Dr. William E. S. Flory Small Business Center, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Sharron Baucom set a shining example for the other citizens of Prince William County through her dedication to government, civic, and community service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Sharron Palmeter Baucom; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sharron Palmeter Baucom as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
