WHEREAS, Officer Gary J. Buro, of the Chesterfield County Police Department, is remembered for his valiant performance as a law-enforcement officer and for his devotion to his family and fellow officers; and

WHEREAS, a native of New York City, Gary J. Buro was a respected and admired 11-year police veteran; and

WHEREAS, a patriotic American, Officer Buro served his country during the Persian Gulf War in Operation Desert Storm as a military police officer in the United States Marine Corps; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, Officer Buro chose a career as a law-enforcement officer and built an impeccable record as an exemplary public servant; and

WHEREAS, Officer Buro served as a patrol officer in Lantana, Florida, for five years and as a dedicated officer working beyond the call of duty in New York City during the challenging days following September 11, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Officer Buro came to Chesterfield County to make a new start after losing his wife, who was the love of his life, and her parents in an automobile accident in Florida; and

WHEREAS, Officer Buro began his career with the Chesterfield County Police Department on January 17, 2006, as a member of the 14th precertified Police Academy; and

WHEREAS, on May 4, 2006, Officer Buro was tragically killed in the line of duty while attending to a domestic dispute with his partner, Officer Joseph Diman; and

WHEREAS, committed to protecting and serving Virginia's citizens and enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, Officer Buro was a 34-year-old courageous public servant and respected citizen who lived an honorable and responsible life; and

WHEREAS, Officer Buro will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his mother, Agnes Thalmann, his father Ralph Buro, Sr., his sister Jennifer, and his brother Ralph, as well as his numerous comrades in Virginia, New York, and Florida; and

WHEREAS, the loss of Officer Buro is tragic, not only for his family but also for his fellow law-enforcement officers and the citizens of the Commonwealth, and it is a reminder of the great sacrifices made by our police officers and all first responders throughout the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a fine law-enforcement officer and outstanding Virginian, Gary J. Buro; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Gary J. Buro as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
