Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 4 of Chapter 7 of Title 18.2 a section numbered 18.2-287.5 as follows:

§ 18.2-287.5. Possession of firearms on Capitol Square prohibited; penalty.

Any person who shall carry a firearm on Capitol Square shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. The provisions of this section shall not apply to any sworn law-enforcement officer or licensed security guard while in the performance of his official duties.

For purposes of this section, "Capitol Square" means the grounds in that area in the City of Richmond bounded by Bank, Governor, Broad, and Ninth Streets, and the interior of the State Capitol, the Patrick Henry Building, and the General Assembly Building.
