HB2905: Charter; City of Suffolk
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That Chapter 367 of the Acts of Assembly of 1973 is amended by adding a section numbered 2.10 as follows:
§ 2.10. Advisory Referenda.
(a) The City Council may submit any question or proposition upon which it otherwise has the authority to act to the electors of the City at an advisory referendum by the adoption of a resolution by a majority of the members elected to Council stating the question or proposition to be submitted and a finding by Council that the submission of the question or proposition to the electors is in the public interest.
(b) The Circuit Court of the City shall submit any question or proposition upon which the City Council otherwise has authority to act to the electors of the City at an advisory referendum upon the filing with the Clerk of the Court of a petition signed by a number of qualified voters in the City equaling 10 percent of the number voting in the City at the last general election.
