HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 751 Offered January 15, 2007 Commending Charles Edward Wood. ---------- Patron-- McEachin ----------

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood, a respected citizen and a longtime employee of the United States Postal Service, celebrates his 100th birthday in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood was born January 17, 1907, in Richmond, graduated from Armstrong High School in 1925, earned a biology degree from Virginia Union University in 1930, and has been a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., for over 78 years; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood proudly served his country for four years during World War II in the United States Army Air Force; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood married Mary Jane Carter, and the couple had a wonderful life together for 53 years; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service for 33 years, Charles Edward Wood worked 20 years of his career as a postal carrier for the Oregon Hill community, retiring on June 30, 1974; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood mentored numerous new postal employees, especially young people, and he provided a shining example of public service to all who knew him; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood has been a faithful member of the Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church since 1919, a deacon in the church for over 25 years, and active in the its many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Charles Edward Wood enjoys reading, history, and conversing and sharing stories with a multitude of friends and neighbors, and remains an active, cherished, and highly valued member of his community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Charles Edward Wood on his dedicated service and support of his community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles Edward Wood as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes on his 100th birthday.
