HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 778 Offered January 19, 2007 Celebrating the life of Corporal Eric Evine Sutphin. ---------- Patron-- Nutter ----------

WHEREAS, Corporal Eric Evine Sutphin of Christiansburg, a courageous and highly respected member of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, died in the line of duty on August 21, 2006; and

WHEREAS, before coming to Montgomery County, Corporal Sutphin amassed a wealth of experience over his distinguished 13-year career in law enforcement, serving with the Buchanan Police Department, the Charlottesville City Police Department, the Albemarle County Police Department, and the Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office; and

WHEREAS, Corporal Sutphin honorably served his country for seven years in the Military Police of the United States Army and was discharged with the rank of sergeant; and

WHEREAS, a professional and dedicated law-enforcement officer, Corporal Sutphin had faced danger in significant arrests over the years and had received numerous awards and commendations for his valiant actions, including Virginia's highest honor presented by the Governor for service above and beyond the call of duty, the Commonwealth Public Safety Medal of Valor; and

WHEREAS, Corporal Sutphin will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his kind and compassionate nature and is greatly missed by his wife Tamara, his beautiful twin daughters, and his loving mother, Jeaneen; countless other family members and friends; and his fellow officers and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding public servant and fine Virginian, Corporal Eric Evine Sutphin; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Corporal Eric Evine Sutphin as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
