WHEREAS, Ray A. Dunn, retired United States Air Force colonel and a former member of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, died on September 15, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Ray Dunn was born at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., was the son of a brigadier general in the Air Force, and grew up in a loving family devoted to patriotic service; and

WHEREAS, Ray Dunn graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in June 1946, and following flight school, served his country in the Army Air Corps in China; and

WHEREAS, after active military duty, Ray Dunn was assigned to serve at the Pentagon, and soon after met and married his beloved wife, Roberta Boyd Bryant, who was a student at George Washington University and a Nelson County native; and

WHEREAS, in 1974, Ray Dunn retired from the military and began a career of public service, working with both military and civilian entities, including two years as the dean of students at Culver Military Academy in Indiana; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life of his fellow citizens, Ray Dunn served on the citizen’s committee working on the county’s subdivision ordinance and was elected to the Nelson County Board of Supervisors representing the West District from 1991 to 1995; and

WHEREAS, Ray Dunn served only one term as a supervisor during a time of dramatic change and development, which included the implementation of a lodging and meals tax, completing the Tye River Elementary School, closing the county landfill, improving relations with Wintergreen, beginning capital planning for the county, bringing the county into the computer age, developing tourism, developing a regional economic partnership, and redrafting the county’s comprehensive plan; and

WHEREAS, Ray Dunn will be fondly remembered for his ardent patriotism and greatly missed by his loving wife and children, his eight precious grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, numerous other family members and friends, and the citizens of Nelson County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine public servant and outstanding Virginian, Ray A. Dunn; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ray A. Dunn as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
