WHEREAS, Clarence Charles Johnson of Newport News, a respected citizen and outstanding educator for 40 years, died on January, 18, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Charles Johnson was a graduate of Huntington High School, Class of 1928, and he earned a bachelor's degree at Virginia State University and a master's degree in education at Columbia University; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to excellence in education, Clarence Charles Johnson was an excellent teacher for many years, first for the public schools in Mecklenburg County and then Newport News; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Charles Johnson's distinguished career in education spanned four decades, ending with his retirement as an assistant principal for Menchville High School of Newport News Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, a great mentor of young people, Clarence Charles Johnson touched the lives of countless students and worked diligently to serve their best interests and aid them in achieving their academic goals; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life of his fellow citizens, Clarence Charles Johnson was a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Zeta Lambda Chapter, and helped to improve Hampton Roads through the organization's community outreach and volunteer service programs; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Charles Johnson was a member of the Saint Paul A.M.E. Church in Newport News, before transferring to Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served one term as an elder and was active in the Bible Study Class, Sunday school, and the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Charles Johnson will be fondly remembered for his honor and dignity, and his commitment to the youth of Hampton Roads and greatly missed by Margaret, his wife of 70 years, his beloved children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren and numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator, community benefactor, and outstanding Virginian, Clarence Charles Johnson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clarence Charles Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
