Celebrating the life of Deputy William Henry Tiedeman, Jr.

WHEREAS, Deputy William Henry Tiedeman, Jr., of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, is remembered for his valiant performance as a law-enforcement officer and for his devotion to his family, community, and fellow officers; and

WHEREAS, on November 7, 2006, Deputy Tiedeman died in the line of duty during a training exercise at the Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Training Center; and

WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, William Tiedeman was born on November 10, 1951, the son of William and Elsie Tiedeman; and

WHEREAS, a proud American patriot, William Henry Tiedeman served his country in the United States Navy for more than 23 years, retiring as a senior chief petty officer; and

WHEREAS, following his retirement from the military, William Tiedeman joined the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, serving as an outstanding deputy who was an asset to the force and respected as an exemplary law-enforcement officer and role model in the community; and

WHEREAS, committed to protecting and serving Virginia's citizens and enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, Deputy Tiedeman was a courageous and professional police officer who was highly respected by his fellow law-enforcement officers; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his community and fellow citizens of Virginia Beach, Deputy Tiedeman was a master Mason with the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 275 and a participant in the organization's many missions in Hampton Roads; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Tiedeman will be fondly remembered as a generous and loving family man and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 32 years, Denise Tiedeman; his son William and his wife Adrian; the light of his life, three-year-old grandson Will Tiedeman; and numerous other loving family members and friends; and

WHEREAS, the sudden loss of  Deputy Tiedeman is tragic, not only for his family but also for his fellow law-enforcement officers and the citizens of the Commonwealth, and a reminder of the great sacrifices made by our police officers and all first responders throughout the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a dedicated public servant and an outstanding Virginian, Deputy William Henry Tiedeman, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Deputy William Henry Tiedeman, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
