HJ914: Commending Terraset Elementary School on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
WHEREAS, in 2007, Terraset Elementary School celebrates 30 years of providing exceptional elementary education to children in the community of Reston; and
WHEREAS, Terraset Elementary School was designed and built during the energy crisis of the 1970s, and the Fairfax County School Board wanted a building that would use significantly less energy than a conventionally designed school; and
WHEREAS, Terraset Elementary was built underground, which provided natural insulation from outside temperature changes, and the roof was made of a solar panel network that was to play a major role in heating and cooling the structure; and
WHEREAS, while the solar panels were eventually taken down due to some safety issues and the high cost of maintenance, other aspects of Terraset Elementary's energy-conscious design continue to provide energy savings every day; and
WHEREAS, beyond the attention attracted by its unique design, Terraset Elementary School has an excellent reputation for its many programs and activities and its partnerships with area businesses; and
WHEREAS, Terraset Elementary School offers mixed-grade classrooms, foreign language instruction, English for speakers of other languages, a center for autistic students, tutoring programs with students from nearby South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School, and special after-school enrichment programs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Terraset Elementary School on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Terraset Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's many years of outstanding service to the Reston community and best wishes for future success.
