WHEREAS, Fire Chief B. G. Lewis III, who has served the Danville Fire Department since 1975, will retire as its outstanding chief on April 1, 2007; and

WHEREAS, a committed public servant, B. G. Lewis III served the Danville community as a member of the Danville Fire Department for many years before becoming fire chief in 1996; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, the Danville City Council, in response to Chief Lewis’ recommendations, established the Fire Marshal’s Office, allowing sworn Fire Prevention and Education Bureau officers to further enforce fire codes and use their fire investigation authority; and 

WHEREAS, Danville’s Regional Fire Training Center, a joint project with Pittsylvania County, and the ambitious and successful Get Alarmed Danville program, which has distributed 4,000 smoke detectors to area residents since 1999, were both established through the hard work and support of Chief Lewis; and

WHEREAS, under his vast experience and steady leadership, Chief Lewis was instrumental in the Danville Fire Department earning a Class 2 Insurance Services Office Rating, which determines the amount of insurance premiums that the citizens of Danville must pay to protect their families and their property; and

WHEREAS, committed to the best interests of the Danville Fire Department and all of its staff and firefighters, Chief Lewis has spearheaded significant improvements in personnel training and fire service to benefit his fellow residents and ensure an enhanced quality of life and a bright future for the City of Danville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Fire Chief B. G. Lewis III for his over three decades of exemplary service to the Danville Fire Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fire Chief B. G. Lewis III as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his dedication to the citizens of Danville and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
