WHEREAS, Pete Castiglione, Director of Student Development and Enrollment Services at Danville Community College, was honored as the first recipient of the Virginia Pioneer Award in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Pete Castiglione received the prestigious award at the annual Virginia Student Services Conference (VSSC), held at Wintergreen, for his pioneering leadership, long-standing commitment, and outstanding service to students; and

WHEREAS, the VSSC is sponsored by the Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers (VACUHO), the Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators (VASPA), and Virginia College Personnel Association (VCPA) and attended by staff from colleges and universities across the state employed in counseling, housing, resident life, student activities, student affairs, health services, and related fields; and

WHEREAS, a native of New York City, Pete Castiglione earned a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern University in 1970 and a master’s degree from Virginia Tech in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Pete Castiglione has been a leader and member of VASPA for 30 years with 25 of those years serving on the VASPA Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS, in 1995, Pete Castiglione became the first VASPA president to be elected from the Virginia Community College System; and

WHEREAS, Pete Castiglione came to Danville Community College (DCC) in 1972 to establish the Child Development Social Work Program; he is also a member of the Danville City Council and a former vice mayor; and

WHEREAS, Pete Castiglione has served DCC for more than 30 years as a professor and an administrator in numerous leadership positions; and

WHEREAS, an excellent administrator and visionary leader, Pete Castiglione has been instrumental in DCC and the VCCS adapting to the needs of students; business, industry, and technology employers; and an evolving state economy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Pete Castiglione as the first recipient of the Virginia Pioneer Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pete Castiglione as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many achievements and his dedication to quality education services in the Commonwealth.
