HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 933 Offered February 16, 2007 Celebrating the life of Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr. ---------- Patrons-- Cline; Senators: Deeds and Hanger ----------

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr., of Vesuvius, an admired citizen, businessman, and respected community leader, died on January 18, 2007; and

WHEREAS, a native of Vesuvius, Clarence Thomas Cash was born on April 7, 1922, lived most of his life in the area, and as a young teenager, began working to support his family at the Mangus General Store; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater as a gunner in the 480th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion; and

WHEREAS, after returning from military duty, Clarence Thomas Cash married Irene F. Seaman on October 29, 1949, and the couple had a son, Clarence Thomas “C T” Cash, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash purchased Mangus General Store, where he worked as a young man, renamed it the C. T. Cash General Store, and successfully operated the business for 47 years; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash was named United States Postmaster for Vesuvius, holding the post for 48 years until his retirement in 1992; and

WHEREAS, concerned about the welfare of his fellow citizens, Clarence Thomas Cash was a faithful member of the Vesuvius Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash participated in many civic organizations and was a founding member of the Vesuvius Community Association and the Vesuvius Ruritan Club, as well as a longtime member of the Steeles Tavern Post 8279 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Thomas Cash will be fondly remembered for his enjoyment of life and traveling the world and greatly missed by his family and good friends in the Vesuvius community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a dedicated community leader, a hard-working businessman, and loving family man, Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the wife of Clarence Thomas Cash, Sr., Irene Cash, and his loving family as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the General Assembly.
