HJ944: Commending Six House, Inc.
WHEREAS, Six House, Inc., is a faith-based, community outreach organization providing educational and economic development programs to people of all ages in the Hampton Roads area; and
WHEREAS, established in 2002 by Jerome Barber and Kevin Swann, the organization's founding principle is that the success of a community is dependent upon the success of individual families, and Six House aspires to improve the community by empowering individuals to make more positive personal decisions that affect their families and society; and
WHEREAS, an outreach ministry of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, Six House works with more than 4,000 people each year through its various programs and activities; and
WHEREAS, youth-focused programs and activities at Six House include the Teen Financial Camp, where young people learn the basics of budgeting and financial planning; the Helping Hands mentoring program, an after-school tutoring program; and a spring break trip to visit colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, Six House's adult programs and events include the Financial Literacy Program, which covers such topics as financial management, income protection, mortgages, and taxes; Celebrating Senior Citizens, an annual festival honoring senior citizens and promoting their well-being and contributions to the community; and computer literacy classes; and
WHEREAS, Six House has been recognized for its work with outstanding community service awards from the Kiwanis Club, the Urban League, and the City of Hampton; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Six House, Inc., for its service to the citizens of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Six House, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its efforts to empower individuals to improve their lives and their communities.
