HJ966: Commending Rhea Butler.
WHEREAS, Rhea Butler, head coach of the T.C. Williams High School girls' volleyball team, was named Patriot District Coach of the Year in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Rhea Butler became the varsity girls' volleyball coach at T.C. Williams in 2002, inheriting a program that was only two years old and that had just lost two star players; and
WHEREAS, with a vision for long-term success, Rhea Butler started a developmental volleyball program for fifth and sixth graders with the Alexandria Department of Recreation, and she has seen that investment pay off as girls who participated in the program are now winning games for T.C. Williams' freshman and junior varsity teams; and
WHEREAS, while Rhea Butler's varsity team did not have a winning record during her first few years as head coach, she knew she was planting the seeds for future success; and
WHEREAS, after going 3–13 in 2005, the 2006 Titans finished the season 10–7 and Coach Butler looks forward to building on that strong showing and establishing a winning tradition for volleyball at T.C. Williams; and
WHEREAS, in addition to Coach Butler being honored as Patriot District Coach of the Year, senior Stephanie Lunt and junior Teri Dua were named to the second team all-district squad, and sophomore Danielle Thorne received an all-district honorable mention; and
WHEREAS, Coach Butler credits the talent and dedication of her players and the support of the school, parents, and fans for the Titans' turnaround in 2006; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Rhea Butler for being named the 2006 Patriot District Coach of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rhea Butler as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her achievements and best wishes for future success.
