HJ968: Commending Carolyn Lewis.
WHEREAS, Carolyn Lewis, a veteran of the Alexandria City Public Schools, was named 2006 Educator of the Year by the Alexandria Times; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from North Carolina Central University, Carolyn Lewis began her career in education in 1969 as a health and physical education teacher at Parker-Gray Middle School in Alexandria and went on to teach and become an administrator at George Washington Middle School; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, the Alexandria school superintendent asked Carolyn Lewis to be principal of the City's Secondary Training and Education Program (STEP), an alternative high school for students who are at risk of dropping out of school, have poor attendance, or fail to produce academically and who need a smaller, more structured environment; and
WHEREAS, ready to meet any challenge, Carolyn Lewis has provided steady and enthusiastic leadership for STEP, inspiring students and teachers alike to perform at a high level; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Lewis considers herself to be a team member more than a supervisor, working collaboratively with her staff rather than handing out orders so that together they can provide high quality instruction and help students achieve their goals; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Lewis has devoted more than 30 years of her life to nurturing and educating the children of Alexandria, and she works tirelessly to connect students and their families to all available resources the City has to offer; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Carolyn Lewis for being named the Alexandria Times' 2006 Educator of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carolyn Lewis as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for her years of outstanding service to the students and the community of Alexandria.
