WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s Club is recognized for 35 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Amherst County and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in April 1972, a group of caring and enthusiastic women organized the nonprofit Amherst Woman’s Club, to promote interest in the cultural, educational, and environmental welfare of Amherst; and

WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s Club is a part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), the largest international organization of women volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s Club is part of GFWC Virginia, which was founded in 1907 by Alice Kyle in Lynchburg, Virginia; and Mrs. W. F. Latchford was elected the first president; and

WHEREAS, during the first few years, the dedicated women of the Amherst Woman’s Club voted to establish and support the Amherst Historical Museum; and

WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s Club signed a “Partnership of Learning” agreement with the Amherst County Schools in February 2005; and

WHEREAS, the largest project undertaken to date is that of presenting each third grader in Amherst County with a hardbound copy of the Merriam-Webster dictionary; and

WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s Club has grown to a loyal and dynamic membership of 120 dedicated women; and

WHEREAS, the Amherst Woman’s club has made a difference in the lives of numerous citizens in Amherst County, especially its young people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Amherst Woman’s Club on the occasion of its 35th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Amherst Woman’s Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the organization's commitment to the citizens and young people of Amherst County.
