Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 2 of Chapter 30 of Title 54.1 a section numbered 54.1-3018.1 and by adding in Article 3 of Chapter 30 of Title 54.1 a section numbered 54.1-3021.1 as follows:

§ 54.1-3018.1. Continuing education.

The Board shall promulgate regulations requiring continuing education for renewal of a license to practice as a registered nurse. The regulations shall require a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education biennially in courses approved by the Board. The Board may grant extensions of time or exemptions from these continuing education requirements in cases of documented illness or undue hardship.

§ 54.1-3021.1. Continuing education.

The Board shall promulgate regulations requiring continuing education for renewal of a license to practice as a practical nurse. The regulations shall require a minimum of eight hours of continuing education biennially in courses approved by the Board. The Board may grant extensions of time or exemptions from these continuing education requirements in cases of documented illness or undue hardship.
