SJ367: Commending Virginia Durrett.
WHEREAS, Virginia Durrett, admired author of 11 books on the history and genealogy of Spotsylvania and Caroline counties, is recognized for her many accomplishments and outstanding service to her community and the citizens of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Durrett is a respected leader of the Spotsylvania Historical Association, a member of the First Historic Preservation Commission of 1987, and the chair of the committee that produced the Red Book, which documents more than 400 important historical sites in Spotsylvania County; and
WHEREAS, a cherished state treasure and amateur historian, Virginia Durrett has provided the community with invaluable knowledge of the colorful history and diverse culture of Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties; and
WHEREAS, over an outstanding 32-year career as an educator and researcher, Virginia Durrett garnered much of her expertise serving as a history teacher and working in conjunction with the county libraries; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Durrett helped found and organize the Francis L. N. Wailer Research Library and Museum and serves as a member of the museum's board of directors; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, Virginia Durrett was the esteemed winner of the Governor Spotswood Award for her knowledge and love of local history and her generous efforts to educate her fellow Spotsylvanians regarding their heritage; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Virginia Durrett for her outstanding service to her community and the citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Virginia Durrett as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her dedication to local historical and cultural preservation.
