WHEREAS, Wendell Byrd was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a 2007 Best of Reston award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Wendell Byrd retired from a 30-year teaching career, most recently at Hutchinson Elementary School in Herndon, and stepped down after more than 20 years as the varsity boys' basketball coach and director of the basketball program at South Lakes High School; and

WHEREAS, though his teaching and coaching records are impressive, Wendell Byrd has also devoted a great deal of time and energy to youth programs in the community, including the Stonegate Community Center and the PIT Teen Program, which later became the Teen Center at the Reston YMCA; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Wendell Byrd has given many scholarships for participation in the summer basketball camp he offered, and he helped create a club at South Lakes High School to provide financial support for youth who couldn't afford the equipment and other items needed to play basketball; and

WHEREAS, in teaching and coaching, Wendell Byrd has always emphasized respect, diligence, and teamwork, and through his support and encouragement, his students and players have learned much more than the fundamentals; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Wendell Byrd for his outstanding service to the citizens of Northern Virginia and congratulate him on his 2007 Best of Reston award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Wendell Byrd as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his efforts on behalf of the students and youth in the community of Reston.
