SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 475 Offered February 2, 2007 Celebrating the life of Milton Glaser. ---------- Patron-- Stosch ----------

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser of Richmond, a respected citizen and a pioneer in the interior design industry, died on January 10, 2007; and

WHEREAS, a native of Philadelphia, Milton Glaser was born on March 11, 1915, to the late Sol and Helen Glaser; and

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1936 with a degree in fine arts; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Milton Glaser designed battleship and aircraft carrier interiors for the New York Shipbuilding Company; and

WHEREAS, shortly after the war, Milton Glaser settled in Richmond and established Milton Glaser Associates, one of the first interior design firms in the South with clients that included the City's Bull and Bear Club, Reynolds Metals Company, and A. H. Robins Pharmaceutical Corporation and Forsythe Memorial Hospital and Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser was a valued design consultant in the restoration of the White House Library during the presidency of John F. Kennedy; and

WHEREAS, a brilliant designer and a pioneer in his field,  Milton Glaser played an invaluable role in advancing interior design as a lucrative and highly respected profession; and

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser was the first president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and served as the organization's national president in 1958 and its chairman of the board in 1960; and

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser loved the Commonwealth and the state's remarkable art, history, and culture, and contributed greatly to its preservation as a member of the Committee of Acquisitions for the Virginia Governor's Mansion and as a member of the board of the Virginia Center for Creative Arts; and

WHEREAS, among his many awards and accolades, Milton Glaser was a distinguished member of the first group of designers to be honored with the Virginia Cultural Laureate designation in 1977; and

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser will be fondly remembered for his many talents and his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by Nancy, his devoted wife of 63 years; his two daughters and their wonderful families, especially his four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a gifted designer and outstanding Virginian, Milton Glaser; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Milton Glaser as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
