WHEREAS, James D. Kornwolf, architectural historian and admired College of William and Mary professor for 34 years, died on December 24, 2005; and

WHEREAS, James Kornwolf graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received a doctoral degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London; and

WHEREAS, Professor Kornwolf was a renowned author of books and other scholarly works on architecture, including the publication of the exhibition catalogs So Good a Design-The Colonial Campus of the College of William & Mary: Its Background, History and Legacy in 1989 and Modernism in America 1937-1941 in 1985, which highlight the role of Virginia in architectural development in colonial times; the book Buildings of Surry and the American Revolution in 1976; and Architecture and Town Planning in North America in three volumes in 2002, which was honored with a best-book award by the American Association of Publishers; and

WHEREAS, Professor Kornwolf’s work, M.H. Baillie Scott and the Arts and Crafts Movement, based on his dissertation, remains the leading analysis on the movement, and he was recently working on an extensive study of the architecture of Colonial Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, Professor Kornwolf was internationally known as an authority on the art and architecture of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Colonial American architecture, garden design, and twentieth-century architecture; and

WHEREAS, an inspirational teacher and mentor of young people and many aspiring historians, Professor Kornwolf was known for his passionate classroom lectures and his great love of art and architecture; and

WHEREAS, Professor Kornwolf will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 40 years, Georgiana, and their two loving children, Peter Kornwolf of Williamsburg and Mary Howell of New Kent; his many peers and beloved students over the years at the College of William and Mary; and his other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine scholar and teacher and outstanding Virginian, James D. Kornwolf; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James D. Kornwolf as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
