WHEREAS, Ollie M. Bowman, Jr., of Hampton, a beloved professor and outstanding community supporter, died on January 28, 2007; and

WHEREAS, an excellent professor of biology at Hampton University, Dr. Ollie M. Bowman, Jr., also served the institution first as dean of admissions and registrar and then as assistant dean of the Graduate College, retiring after 30 years of outstanding service in 1996; and

WHEREAS, called "Doc" by his students and athletes, Dr. Bowman designed the Hampton University flag; worked as the faculty athletic chairman, chair of the Federal Credit Union's Credit Committee, and president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA); and participated on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) committees to ensure that student athletes secured a quality education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bowman was a mentor and great believer in young people; he served as the charter organizational representative and unit commissioner of the Heritage District of the Boy Scouts of America, and was awarded its Silver Beaver Award of Distinguished Service to Youth in 2007; and

WHEREAS, a devoted Sunday school and Bible study leader at Carver Presbyterian Church in Newport News, Dr. Bowman continuously visited the sick and shut-in members of the church; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bowman will be fondly remembered for his love of life and his generous nature and greatly missed by Gaye, his wife of 45 years; his children, Frank, Kimlynn, Dee, Judi, and Lisa Joy; his five wonderful grandchildren; and numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an exceptional educator, a compassionate mentor of numerous young people in Hampton Roads, and an outstanding Virginian, Ollie M. Bowman, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ollie M. Bowman, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
