HJ227: Commending the National/International Cultural Exhibits on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
WHEREAS, the National/International Cultural Exhibits, founded by Carlton A. Funn, Sr., celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Carlton Funn organized his extraordinary collection of items from African-American culture and history into an exciting and compelling exhibit known as NICE, National/International Cultural Exhibits, for all of the citizens of Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth to enjoy; and
WHEREAS, NICE has evolved over the years to include innovative technology, diverse information, and artifacts depicting at least 28 different cultures, and annual exhibits include lectures on Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.; presentations on women’s rights and Asian-American, Hispanic-American, and Native-American heritage; and discussions on a wide variety of topics such as diversity in America and the importance of building character in children; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated and exemplary educator, Carlton A. Funn, Sr., taught school in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., for 38 years and was the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Region's 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award; and
WHEREAS, a committed activist and community volunteer, Carlton Funn gives his time and talents to many civic organizations, including as a member of the Alexandria Bicentennial Committee and a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Alexandria; and
WHEREAS, in June 2007, Carlton Funn was appointed to the Board of Visitors of Mount Vernon by Governor Tim Kaine; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the National/International Cultural Exhibits on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carlton A. Funn, Sr., on behalf of NICE as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the organization's commitment to promoting diverse culture and history in the Commonwealth.
