HJ480: Celebrating the life of Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane, Jr.

WHEREAS, United States Army Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane, Jr., who grew up in Norfolk, died August 14, 2007, while serving his country in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, Chief Warrant Officer McFarlane joined the Army in August 1994 just a few months after graduating from Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk where he was a member of the track and field team; and
WHEREAS, Chief Warrant Officer McFarlane married his high school sweetheart, Shanaye, before heading off to his first base assignment in Colorado; other assignments took them to Germany, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and, in August 2006, to Fort Wainwright, Alaska; and
WHEREAS, Chief Warrant Officer McFarlane left on his third deployment to Iraq in July 2007 with the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49; known as Task Force Dragon, it comprises a group of around 200 pilots, crew chiefs, mechanics, and medics whose mission is to provide air support to ground troops in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, a positive and joyful person and a man of great faith who served as a part-time minister at a church in Fairbanks, Chief Warrant Officer McFarlane will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his wife, his two young children, his mother, his three sisters, and many other family members and dear friends; and
WHEREAS, Chief Warrant Officer McFarlane's death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane, Jr. as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
