Summary

Apprentice hunting license.  Authorizes the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to issue an apprentice hunting license.  This license would be issued in lieu of the current state resident or nonresident basic hunting license.  It is a one-time license that expires one year from the date of purchase and does not require the licensee to complete a hunter education course.  The fee for obtaining the license would be $10 for residents and $20 for nonresidents.  The purpose of the bill is to extend limited hunting privileges to persons interested in learning about hunting sports.

Jackson Landers writes:

Great idea. Please pass this bill. I took up hunting just a few years ago as an adult and believe me when I say that it is very difficult for someone to start doing this out of nowhere if you didn't grow up with it. If it weren't for the fact that I had family-owned land on which to start hunting under license-exempt status, I would not have taken up the activity.

Now I get a license every year and hunt on public land all over Virginia and when my daughter is old enough I will teach her to hunt as well. I am living proof that the reduction in numbers of licensed hunters can be countered through recruitment of non-hunting adults. But you've got to give people like me an opening to get in through.

I agree Jackson Landers.
I had Hunter Safety back when I was in High School. Yes, guns in school.
Teach your kids to hunt and you wont be hunting for your kids.
