SJ1: Celebrating the life of Walter R. Stickel, Jr.
WHEREAS, Walter R. Stickel, Jr., of Highland Springs, an esteemed citizen and respected leader of the fire service in Virginia, died on July 16, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Walter Stickel began his distinguished fire service career as a volunteer firefighter in Highland Springs in 1952, and became the 15th paid firefighter employed by Henrico County in 1953; and
WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Walter Stickel was promoted through the ranks of the fire service as a junior captain, a senior captain, battalion chief, and deputy chief; and
WHEREAS, on December 1, 1971, Walter Stickel was promoted to the position of fire chief for the Henrico County Division of Fire, a promotion of which he was immensely proud; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stickel instituted many changes within the Henrico County Division of Fire, including changing the color of the fire engines from the historical red to the more visible lime green; and
WHEREAS, a strong advocate for fire safety in Henrico County, Chief Stickel was active in many community and professional organizations, including serving as president of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association; and
WHEREAS, an experienced and knowledgeable administrator, Chief Stickel served the citizens of Henrico County with distinction as fire chief for 12 years, retiring on December 27, 1983; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stickel maintained a close relationship with the fire department and his fellow firefighters in his retirement, visiting stations close to his home and meeting friends and associates for breakfast; and
WHEREAS, Walter Stickel proudly served his country as a corpsman in World War II, as well as in the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Walter Stickel served on the vestry and was supportive of the church’s many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Walter Stickel will be remembered for his positive approach to the fire service and his many contributions to fire safety and prevention in Henrico County and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, Walter R. Stickel, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter R. Stickel, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
