SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 105 Celebrating the life of Bill Arnold Adkins.   Agreed to by the Senate, January 17, 2008 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 25, 2008  

WHEREAS, Bill Arnold Adkins of Collinsville, an admired businessman and longtime community supporter, died July 7, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Bill Adkins was born on November 5, 1929, in Stuart, to the late Thomas Everett Adkins and Sally Eggleston Adkins; and

WHEREAS, a successful area business leader, Bill Adkins was the respected owner and operator of Adkins Construction Company since 1955; and

WHEREAS, devoted to the prosperity and the wise development of Henry County, Bill Adkins received many community service and leadership awards for his outstanding efforts to improve the quality of life of his fellow residents, including the Dalton Community Service Award in 2002; and

WHEREAS, throughout his 50-year career in the building industry, Bill Adkins made many contributions to the community, but he was especially proud of his service as founder and president of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity; and

WHEREAS, Bill Adkins gave his time and immense talents to many civic and professional organizations throughout his life and career, including the Virginia Baptist General Board in Richmond; the board of what is now Hope Tree in Salem, the Salvation Army’s Capital Campaign, the Piedmont Trust Bank, the Henry County Planning Commission, the Patrick Henry Community College Educational Foundation, the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, and the Martinsville-Henry County Apartment Council; and

WHEREAS, Bill Adkins received the Beducian-Gusler Award from the Homebuilders Association of Martinsville and Henry County that recognizes a person who has “been active in community service, has promoted the building industry, and placed the needs of others before his own”; and

WHEREAS, Bill Adkins was a faithful member, deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Starling Avenue Baptist Church and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Bill Adkins will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Irene Minter Adkins; his daughter Shirley Craven, and four sons, Stanley, Dennis, Bruce, and Ken Adkins and their wonderful families, including nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; numerous other loving family members and friends; and his fellow citizens in Henry County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, Bill Arnold Adkins; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bill Arnold Adkins as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
