SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 125 Commending Fairfax County Future Problem Solvers.   Agreed to by the Senate, January 24, 2008 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 1, 2008  

WHEREAS, two Fairfax County teams and one Fairfax County individual student won champion trophies at the 2007 Future Problem Solving International Conference (FPSIC) held in Fort Collins, Colorado, on May 31-June 3, 2007; and

WHEREAS, founded by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance, FPSIC engages students in creative problem solving, stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, and encourages students to develop a vision for the future; and

WHEREAS, Future Problem Solving Program International involves more than 250,000 students annually from the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Russia; and

WHEREAS, ten teams, including Fairfax County’s two outstanding problem solving teams, were awarded championship trophies out of the 59 teams competing in the FPSIC senior division, which was comprised of students in grades 10–12; and

WHEREAS, the independent team of Sarah Blount and Chris Goslin from J.E.B. Stuart High School and Zoë Hoffman from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) placed eighth; and

WHEREAS, winning ninth place was the TJHSST team comprised of Cassandra Xia, Rose Zu, Jesse Liu, and Oleg Lazarev; and

WHEREAS, Logan Gates, a TJHSST sophomore, won fourth place champion in the individual senior division problem-solving competition; and

WHEREAS, the enthusiastic and talented Fairfax County teams represented the Commonwealth at the international conference after taking first and second place at the Future Problem Solving of Virginia State Bowl XVI held in April 2007; and

WHEREAS, Future Problem Solving of Virginia is a year-long educational program throughout the Commonwealth that combines the rigorous intellectual challenge of creative problem solving with an interdisciplinary study of the future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate the Fairfax County Future Problem Solvers on their championship performances at the 2007 Future Problem Solving International Conference; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to coaches Sandy Evans and Fred Lampazzi on behalf of Fairfax County’s outstanding FPSIC winners.
