WHEREAS, R. Lindsay Gordon III, an admired community leader and respected longtime Orange County supervisor, died on August 29, 2007; and

WHEREAS, born in Richmond on May 2, 1922, Lindsay Gordon was the son of the late R. Lindsay Gordon, Jr., and Nellie Blair Hunt Gordon; and

WHEREAS, a citizen greatly revered in the community, Lindsay Gordon began his public service in Orange County by winning a seat on the board of supervisors, with 70 percent of the vote, representing the Taylor District in 1963; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to improving the quality of life of his fellow citizens, Lindsay Gordon served on the Orange County Board of Supervisors for 28 years, including many years as board chairman; and

WHEREAS, an advocate for the prosperity and thoughtful economic development of Orange County, as well as the best interests of its citizens, Lindsay Gordon served on the Virginia State Milk Commission for 11 years and the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative for 24 years and was a supporter of the construction of the regional jail; and

WHEREAS, always concerned for the well-being of his neighbors, Lindsay Gordon was instrumental in establishing the Orange County Nursing Home; and

WHEREAS, Lindsay Gordon was a faithful member of the North Pamunkey Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher of its adult men’s class, and an enthusiastic participant in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Lindsay Gordon will be fondly remembered as a true Virginia gentleman and greatly missed by Winifred, his wife of 65 years; his three daughters, Carey, Sandra, and Jacquelin; his five grandsons and five great-grandchildren; his numerous other loving family members and friends; and the residents of Orange County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine public servant and outstanding Virginian, R. Lindsay Gordon III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of R. Lindsay Gordon III as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
