SJ19: Celebrating the life of Evelyn Daniel Chandler.
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler, an admired citizen of Isle of Wight County and an outstanding community leader, died on December 2, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler played an active role in enhancing the quality of life of many of the citizens in Hampton Roads and throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, raised in historic Aberdeen Gardens in Hampton, Evelyn Daniel Chandler worked to instill community pride and received recognition by leading efforts to obtain both state and national Historic Landmark designations for her community; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler was elected to serve as the first female vice president of the Virginia State Conference for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and she helped institute a statewide training program for successful branch management and fundraising geared to sustain the foundation of the organization’s mission; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler contributed to statewide historic preservation policy and practice as one of the founding members of the Virginia History Initiative in 1997 and brought great insight and perspective, as a citizen voice on the Virginia State Review Board for nearly eight years from 1997 through 2004; her vision and passion encouraged both participation and recognition of African-American history in communities throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, during a time of major development, Evelyn Daniel Chandler was appointed to serve as a member and later the chair of the Isle of Wight County Planning Commission; she worked to secure historic designation and was a certified planner, in addition to chairing the Street Naming Committee that reviewed and recommended approval for the establishment of streets in major developments like Gatling Pointe and Eagle Harbor; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler took on the impossible task of preservation and restoration of the historic Boykin’s Tavern in Isle of Wight County, which until her involvement, had been slated for destruction; she led efforts to secure funding to complete the restoration of this notable county landmark; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler was married to her husband of 55 years, Lloyd Chandler, and the couple traveled the world together in service to the United States Air Force with tours of duty throughout the United States and the world; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler fulfilled her lifelong commitment to rearing her son Kenneth L. Chandler, who married Regina Matthews Chandler of Hopewell, and enjoying three grandchildren, Kirsten, Jillian, and Nicholas, the true jewels of her life, as well as taking pride in her son’s appointment as the city manager of Portsmouth; and
WHEREAS, following the slow physical decline during a four-month illness, Evelyn Daniel Chandler departed this life in the early morning of December 2, 2007, in exchange for a reward of everlasting life with the Heavenly Father; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Daniel Chandler will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving family, her many friends and admirers, and the residents of Isle of Wight County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby celebrate with admiration and gratitude the life and many contributions of Evelyn Daniel Chandler to her fellow citizens; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Evelyn Daniel Chandler as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
